Why application timing matters
US graduate admissions are a sequence of deadlines, not a single event. For international students, understanding the full 18-month timeline — from testing to document collection to visa processing — often determines whether an acceptance turns into a successful matriculation. This guide walks through the standard HYP Global Pre-Master application calendar for both Spring and Fall intakes.
The 18-month calendar
Most US master's programs in business and engineering open applications 12 months before the start term. For HYP Pre-Master Boot Camp applicants, we recommend beginning preparation at least 6 months before the university application window opens, for a total runway of roughly 18 months.
Months 18-12: Foundation and Testing
Focus on language testing (TOEFL, IELTS, or CET-6), standardised tests (GRE, GMAT) where required, and initial undergraduate academic review. This is also the stage to map target degree programs against your undergraduate background and identify gaps that a Pre-Master Boot Camp course can fill.
Months 12-6: HYP Pre-Master enrolment
HYP's Pre-Master Boot Camps run in 10-12 week cohorts twice yearly. Joining the Spring cohort (February – May) before a Fall application window, or the Fall cohort (September – November) before a Spring application window, means your academic-readiness portfolio is ready when admissions committees review applications.
Months 6-3: University applications
Submit through standard application portals. Attach your Pre-Master Boot Camp transcript, lecturer recommendations, and portfolio assets. HYP's advising team walks each applicant through program-specific prompts and supporting materials.
Months 3-0: Admissions decisions and visa
After decisions arrive, begin visa processing immediately. F-1 appointments can take weeks in some consular jurisdictions. Coordinate with your partner university's international student office on I-20 issuance and SEVIS registration.
Building your personal calendar
Download the HYP Global Application Timeline Worksheet from our admissions team. It translates the schedule above into region-specific deadlines for TOEFL/IELTS test centers, GRE/GMAT availability, and visa appointment wait times in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the US.
Common timing mistakes to avoid
- Starting too late: Applicants who begin in the 6-month window often lack time for Pre-Master coursework before the application deadline.
- Ignoring visa wait times: F-1 interview slots can be scarce in high-demand months. Plan for 8-12 weeks of buffer.
- Over-testing: Re-taking TOEFL or GRE repeatedly at the expense of academic preparation dilutes your application.
- Scattered applications: Applying to 10+ programs without a focused strategy weakens each individual application.
How HYP Global supports each stage
HYP's advising and admissions teams partner with applicants from the first consultation through visa processing. Pre-Master Boot Camp participants receive weekly academic check-ins, application drafting support, and direct connections to partner-university admissions teams. Online Credits participants receive comparable transcript and credit portability support.
