Your 2026 U.S. University Application Checklist
A month-by-month roadmap covering test prep, essays, recommendations, and submission deadlines for U.S. undergraduate and graduate applications.

Applying to U.S. universities is a year-long project. Use this checklist to keep test scores, essays, recommendations, and financial documentation on track from the spring before you apply through the regular-decision deadline.

Spring (12 months out)

  • Lock in target test dates (SAT/ACT or GRE/GMAT).
  • Build an initial school list with academic, financial, and visa-feasibility filters.
  • Begin drafting your story for personal statements.

Summer

  • Visit campuses (or attend virtual sessions) and capture notes for supplemental essays.
  • Outline 2–3 essay themes; request recommendation letters early.

Fall

  • Finalize the Common App, UC, or Coalition profile.
  • Submit Early Action / Early Decision (Nov 1–15).
  • Confirm transcripts and test scores were received.

Winter

  • Submit Regular Decision applications by Jan 1–15.
  • File CSS Profile and FAFSA where applicable.
  • Begin visa-document preparation in parallel with admit decisions.
